Call for Late Breaking Abstracts

Late Breaking Abstracts

The ISA2012 Scientific Program Committee invites the submission of Late Breaking Abstracts. Late Breaking Abstracts will generally be allocated a poster presentation. However, original work that is considered of an especially high standard and importance to the Symposium content will be considered for an oral/mini-oral presentation.

All successful abstracts will be published on a USB to be given to the Symposium delegates, and will be published on the ISA2012 website. Presenting authors must be registrants at the Symposium. All abstracts must be submitted online via the Symposium website using the online submission form.

Abstract Guidelines

Abstract Content Guidelines

  • Abstracts must be submitted using the Microsoft Word template provided on the Symposium website.
  • Abstracts should take the form of a paragraph of 250 words. Abstracts exceeding the word limit will be returned for resubmission.
  • Abstracts must be submitted in clear English with accurate grammar and spelling of a quality suitable for publication.
  • The abstract should state the problem being addressed, the purpose of the paper, basic procedures/methods, main findings and principle conclusions. If necessary, references should be minimally cited in the body of the abstract.
  • A small number of graphs and tables may be included in the abstract, provided they add value to the content and remain within the bounds of the template.
  • Any funding support for research should be stated at the end.

Abstract Format Guidelines

The purpose of the abstract is to define the precise subject of the presentation to an audience.

Title
The abstract title should be short, informative and contain major key words. It should be in sentence case, bold, and left and right justified.

Authors
Abstract titles should be followed by authors’ first names and surnames (with the presenting author in bold) with superscript numbers for institution. Corresponding to these numbers, names of institutions should follow, including city, state and country (in this order). Do not include degrees or professional titles (e.g. Dr, Prof, etc,).

Example below:
Barry Smith1, Penny Jones1,2, Jeffrey Woods2
1University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia
2University of Queensland, St Lucia, QLD, Australia

Text

  • Abstract text must be Times New Roman, 12 point font size, single-spaced and left and right justified.
  • Leave a line between sections but do not indent.
  • Use standard abbreviations only. Within the body of the abstract, when using abbreviations spell out the name in full at the first mention and follow with the abbreviation in the parenthesis. Abbreviations may be used in the title, provided the name in full is outlined in the body of the abstract.

Compliance to the specifications is imperative. Any abstract that does not comply with these specifications will not be accepted for review and will be returned to you by the Symposium Organisers for resubmission.

Abstract Themes

Abstract authors will be required to indicate which Theme best matches the content of their abstract. Themes for ISA2012 are:

  • Atherosclerosis and the immune system
  • Diabetes, insulin resistance and atherosclerosis
  • Epidemiology and the emergence of atherosclerosis in developing countries
  • Genetic and genomic approaches for identifying new therapeutic targets and risk factors
  • Gene therapy and atherosclerosis
  • HDL function and therapeutic strategies for raising HDL levels
  • Imaging in atherosclerosis
  • Mechanistic aspects of atherosclerosis
  • New insights into lipoprotein metabolism
  • New risk factors and biomarkers in atherosclerosis: lipidomic and proteomic approaches
  • New therapeutic approaches for treating atherosclerosis
  • Pharmacogenomics of atherosclerotic disease
  • Recent advances in nutrition, nutrigenomics and nutraceuticals
  • Vascular biology of atherosclerosis
  • Visceral obesity, metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis

Evaluation Criteria and Review Process

Abstracts will be independently reviewed and scored by several reviewers in August/September 2011, using the following criteria:

  1. Clearly written
  2. Internally consistent
  3. Indicates aims or hypothesis of the research/paper
  4. Describes appropriate methods/methodology
  5. Describes relevant results
  6. Draws valid conclusions from the results
  7. Is relevant to the Symposium audience

Reviewer scores and comments will be strongly considered when developing the Symposium program and offering presentation slots.

Abstract Embargo

The accepted abstracts are made available to the public on the ISA2012 website in advance of the Symposium. Thus, the first release of the abstracts is a public release. Coverage of additional research being presented at ISA2012 is under embargo until the date of presentation.

Academic institutions, private organisations and companies with products whose value may be influenced by information contained in an abstract may issue a press release to coincide with the availability of an abstract. However, ISA2012 continues to require that information that goes beyond that contained in the abstract (e.g. discussion of the abstract done as part of a scientific presentation) is to be embargoed until the start of the scientific sessions. Violation of this policy may result in the abstract being withdrawn from the meeting and other measures deemed appropriate. Journalists failing to abide by the embargo may have their press credentials revoked.
